Professional Home Stagers are designers/decorators who will make your home more marketable. They will recommend neutral walls and a simplified layout of your furniture, as well as minimal decor. This will mean removing all family portraits and awards from your rooms and walls.

The purpose of depersonalizing your home is to allow a buyer to imagine themselves living in your home. Don’t take it personally, because the Home Stager’s job is to make your home more marketable. Depersonalizing also means replacing your style with something more modern and minimalistic.

1. Disengage your emotions and chuck or store your stuff

Home stagers realize selling your home can be an emotional time for you. It can be difficult for a home seller having to live in a staged home that they don’t recognize. Chucking or storing your personal items will allow the stager to present your home in an appealing manner for buyers.

They may recommend storing your furniture and replacing it in the interim with more modern pieces. Most home stagers have a supply of modern furniture that they can rent to you for a timeframe until your home sells.

Remember to stay focused and unemotional about the process, as it will be worth it in the end when your staged home sells faster and for more money.

2. Fresh coat of paint in neutral colors

You may be fond of your brightly painted walls, however a neutral color palette is more appealing to buyers. Softer hues will brighten and enlarge a space versus powerful colors. Freshly painted walls present a move-in condition feel

3. Furniture rearrangement

A home stager views your home differently than you, and will move your furniture to improve the flow for movement around a room. It’s fine if you want to squeeze by furniture to move about, but not great for a buyer who will perceive your rooms to be small and cramped. The home stager may even remove furniture and place it in another room for aesthetics.

4. Updating window treatments

If you’ve spent a fortune on your existing curtains and are fond of them, take them down and store them for your next home. There is a good chance the buyers will ask for all window coverings in the offer, so it’s best to remove your favorite curtains now.

Replace your curtains with sheer white curtains and a set of panels. This won’t cost you a lot of money. Avoid patterns and stick to a color that will compliment any decor.

5. Update light fixtures, lamps and floor lamps

Replace outdated lighting fixtures for something more modern. A home stager will also want you to display nice table lamps and floor lamps in different styles. Even a cheap lamp can look expensive with the right lampshade and bulb. Lighting in a room is very important in setting the mood. Inadequate lighting makes a room feel dark and depressing.

Don’t forget to install new lightbulbs in all rooms. Lightbulbs will hold odors from cooking and smoking.

6. Presenting the bedroom like a retreat

A home stager will highly recommend that you upgrade your bedding to something more attractive and luxurious. New bedding and attractive pillows make a bedroom feel fresh and inviting.

Don’t leave a spare bedroom empty. Add an inexpensive inflatable mattress with new bedding, lamp and bedside table to make the room feel complete.
