You don’t have to have a huge budget to remodel your kitchen.  A major renovation can be quite costly, but a remodel can still make a huge improvement in your kitchen. Think about what you would like to change in your kitchen and then do some research to create a budget for your remodel. A simple kitchen remodel starts with a fresh coat of paint. Warm neutrals are always a safe option when painting a kitchen. If you have a really small budget, consider doing your remodel in stages.

 1. Update your kitchen appliances

New appliances can modernize your kitchen. Big box stores sell appliances at a bundled price and can save you hundreds of dollars.  If you are planning on installing new cupboards, consider leaving your appliances in the same place. Keeping appliances in the same place can save money not having to move electrical outlets.  Some stores sell dented appliances at a discount. Even with a new but dented appliance you will benefit from its energy efficiency.

2. Kitchen cabinets

Replacing kitchen cabinets is usually the biggest cost when renovating your kitchen. If you are working with a small reno budget, consider resurfacing your cabinetry. If the cabinets are in good shape, consider painting them. Be sure to clean and prime cabinets before painting. Another option is to reface the cabinets with laminate. Outdated cabinets can also be spruced up with new doors. If you install brand-new cabinets you may have to hire a plumber to move your existing pipes and drains.

With brand-new cabinets your options are ready to assemble cabinets or custom cabinets. Custom cabinetry can be quite expensive with a range of $20,000 to $70,000. Ready to assemble cabinets come in many styles and colors and you can save a lot of money assembling them yourself. Custom cabinets are built and have limited options with sizes, styles and finishes.

Updating the hardware on your cabinets can run into the hundreds of dollars. If you can find new hardware at a reasonable price and you don’t have to drill new holes, updating hardware would be a great improvement.

3. Countertops and backsplashes

Countertops come in a wide range of surfaces, and products like concrete, tile and stone and more. Granite is beautiful but not in everyone’s budget. Laminates have come a long way and you can find one that looks like granite without the huge price tag. After you have completed your cupboards and countertop, the backsplash can be installed. If you are looking for an inexpensive backsplash your local hardware store will sell peel and stick backsplashes at a reasonable price. If you don’t like backsplash you can always consider a cheaper alternative like wallpaper.

4. Flooring

If you are lucky enough to have hardwood flooring in your kitchen, a simple refinish can do the job. If not, there are so many flooring options today including sealed cork which a less expensive option. You might be interested to know that cork flooring is easier on the feet and your back than a tiled or wood floor.

5. Lighting

Recessed lighting in the kitchen is beautiful but can be quite expensive to install. Consider track lighting as an alternative to recessed lighting or hang a pendant light where you need it the most in your kitchen. In addition, under cabinet lighting can also add some much-needed light to your kitchen.
