The majority of homes use forced air heating. The most common being boilers and radiators. New furnaces are more efficient, with fuel utilization efficiency at 90 percent of the fuel used converted into heat.

Most homeowners are searching for an alternative heating source to reduce heating costs over the winter months. Here  are several alternative fuel sources to heat your home.

1. Pellet stove

Pellet stoves are the cleanest solid fuel heating options on the market. Pellet stoves are easier to install than fireplaces and wood burning stoves. Choose the correct size for your home.  These appliances can produce heat at rates between 8,000 and 90,000 BTU per hour. They require weekly cleanings and annually professional cleaning.

2. Geothermal heat pumps

These heat pumps rely on underground temperatures to heat a pump during the winter. Your homes location will dictate the underground temperatures throughout the year. Warmer underground temperatures make these pumps more efficient than air source heat pumps, which first must warm the outside cold air.  Lifespan of  this unit is about 25 years.

Geothermal systems are one of the most eco friendly options. The costs of purchase and installation can be twice as expensive as a standard oil/gas furnace, but once installed costs little to operate.

3. Propane wall furnace

Propane fireplaces are very attractive and most people will replace their existing fireplace with a propane insert. They are very versatile units and can be place in almost any room.  Propane tanks are installed outside of the home and are easy to fill and maintain.

4. In floor radiant heating

In floor heating, can be solar powered or electric or boiler powered. They save costs by eliminating  heat loss that occurs when hot air passes through the ductwork.

In floor heating is beneficial to people with allergies because it doesn’t blow around hot air. However, in floor heating, it requires floor removal and replacement, such as tile or hardwood. In floor heating is a better choice for new construction or a home undergoing a renovation.

The best choice really depends on your home’s infrastructure and what you want to use to supplement your existing system.
